How do I check the status of my ESTA application?

The status of your ESTA application can be accessed on the official website of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. There are two ways to log in:

  • With the use of your application number, passport number and your date of birth
  • With the use of your passport number, date of birth, your first and last name, and your citizenship

It depends on which information you have on-hand.

You can check the status of your ESTA online at any time!

What does my ESTA status mean?

There are three different messages that can be displayed when you check the status of your ESTA. The different ESTA application responses and their meanings are:

Status Meaning
Authorization approved Your ESTA application has been authorized
Travel not authorized Ihr Your ESTA application has been denied
Authorization pending Your ESTA application has not yet been authorized or denied

How can I check the status of my ESTA application?

After you have completed and submitted your final ESTA application, you can check the processing status of your ESTA online on the official website of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Generally, the status of your ESTA application is available within seconds of submitting your application.

Please be aware that it can take up to 72 hours to process your ESTA. If you do not have your ESTA authorized within minutes, there is no need to worry.

Do I have to print my ESTA application?

You are not required to print your ESTA application and bring it with you to the USA, but we highly recommend it. There are advantages to having your authorized ESTA printed out and with you while traveling:

  • If you happen to have made a mistake in your ESTA application, it is easier to spot when your ESTA has been printed than having to log in to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to check your data.
  • In general, the airlines have the necessary software to electronically check if you are traveling with an ESTA. In case of a technical failure, it is always better to have your ESTA printed and on-hand.
  • Printing your ESTA can help you answer questions asked by the border officer. The answers you give to the border officer should be the same as those in your ESTA.
  • If you plan to travel to the USA again, you can easily check the validity of your ESTA on the printed documents.

Be on the safe side: Keep track of your ESTA more easily by printing it!

Can I update my data in my application?

After submitting your ESTA, there is very little data that you can change. There are some data that cannot be changed and a new ESTA is required. This includes name changes. If you have changed your name or made spelling mistakes in your application, then you must apply for a new ESTA.

Please be aware that you cannot change your passport number either. If you get a new passport or there is a mistake in your passport number, then you must apply for a new ESTA.

There are some data which you have the option to update. Changing your address, for example, can be done online. That is why it is important to record the application number given to you by the travel authorization system. Be aware that you are required to update changes to your name and other personal details, passport and security questions. You are not necessarily required to update your flight details, US address or your residential address in your ESTA application.
